Roofing has a reputation as a trade where it’s hard to know who to trust. A quick search for “roofer” in any Hertfordshire town turns up dozens of results. So it’s genuinely difficult to tell a good one from a rushed cowboy operation, before you’ve handed over any money. Bliss Roofing has been trading since 1947, passed from father to son to grandson. That longevity is worth explaining, rather than just stating on a homepage.
Accountability that outlasts a single job
A firm that’s been trading under the same family name for close to eighty years has a strong incentive to do the job properly the first time. Bad work travels fast in a small area. So if a roof leaks two winters after we’ve fitted it, that’s our name and our reputation on the line. It’s not an anonymous limited company that might not exist in five years. As a result, that accountability shapes how we quote, what materials we recommend, and how we handle a callback if something isn’t right.
Knowledge that’s actually local
We’ve worked across Hoddesdon, Cheshunt, Hertford and the wider Lea Valley for decades. So we’ve seen how the local housing stock was actually built. We know which estates have particular timber or felt problems, which older terraces still have original slate worth saving, and which flat-roof extensions from the 1970s and 80s are now due for replacement. That’s the sort of knowledge that comes from doing the work over time in the same towns, not from a general trade certificate.
Traditional skills, still practised
Some roofing skills are becoming less common, as the trade has shifted toward faster, standardised methods. This includes dressing lead properly around a chimney, working with natural slate, and understanding how an older timber roof structure was actually built. However, since we’ve kept these skills alive across three generations, we can take on jobs that a newer firm sometimes has to turn away, particularly on period properties. Our lead flashing guide and our slate roof lifespan guide go into more detail on why that traditional craft still matters on the right roof.
What this means in practice
- We give honest advice on repair versus replacement, rather than upselling a bigger job than you need
- We know the common issues in specific local streets and estates, which speeds up diagnosis
- We stand behind our work under our own name, not a franchise or a rebrand
- We can take on traditional materials — slate, lead, clay tile — that some newer firms avoid
If you’d like to talk to a family firm about your roof rather than a call centre, our contact page is the quickest way to reach us. Or take a look at the full range of services we cover and the areas we serve across Hertfordshire and the Lea Valley.
